Public Engagement & Policy Work

me_darkened.jpg

Professor Norman Fenton is actively engaged in public debate on the role of evidence, risk, and statistical reasoning in policymaking.

His work in this area focuses on improving how uncertainty is communicated and ensuring that complex data is interpreted rigorously rather than selectively or ideologically.

Key Areas of Focus

  • The use and misuse of statistical models in public policy

  • Risk communication and decision-making under uncertainty

  • Standards of evidence in science and medicine

  • Institutional incentives and failures within academia

COVID-19 and Evidence-Based Policy

During the COVID-19 years, Professor Fenton was a prominent commentator on the interpretation of epidemiological data, highlighting what he viewed as weaknesses in modelling assumptions, data quality, and risk communication. His 2024 book Fighting Goliath, co-authored with Martin Neil, exposed the flawed science and statistics behind Covid policies

His contributions formed part of a wider debate about transparency, proportionality, and the appropriate use of scientific evidence in high-stakes policy decisions.

Academic Standards and Institutional Reform

In 2025, he joined Advance UK as a College Member, with a focus on addressing:

  • corruption

  • ideological capture

  • structural dysfunction within British academia

His work in this area examines how institutional incentives can distort research priorities, limit open debate, and undermine public trust in expertise. His forthcoming book (May 2026) explores these themes in depth, setting out a critique of current academic structures alongside proposals for reform.

Approach

Across all of his public engagement, Professor Fenton advocates:

  • rigorous probabilistic reasoning

  • transparency in modelling and assumptions

  • open scientific debate, including the tolerance of dissenting views
